Sew a lined sun hat with a proper stitched brim — three head sizes included

SUMMER is built from a six-panel crown with a separate brim piece stitched on, which gives it a firmer, more structured shape than a simple turned-brim hat. Make the outer and the lining the same way, join them, and turn the whole thing through a gap at the back.

Choose a lightweight, breathable cotton and you'll have a hat that keeps the sun off for the beach, a picnic or the garden — and with three sizes in one pattern you can make matching hats for the whole family.

What you'll learn

  • Joining six curved crown panels accurately, pressing each seam open as you go
  • Making the brim and matching its seam to a crown seam so it sits square
  • Building outer and lining as two complete hats
  • Leaving and closing a 10cm turning gap near the back seam
  • Topstitching the brim — and optionally continuing in concentric circles for a firmer, decorative finish

What you'll need

Medium weight cotton for the main outer and medium weight cotton for the lining. Seam allowance is ¼" throughout.
