Materials Required

  • Main Fabric: ½m of your chosen fabric
  • Waterproof Lining: ½m PUL waterproof fabric
  • Interfacing: ½m iron-on fusible fleece interfacing (H640)
  • Fastenings: Kam Snaps
  • Essential Tools: Sewing machine, iron for pressing, clips, coordinating thread, and a tube turner if you have one

What You Will Learn / Techniques

  • Making the Fastening Strap: Fold and sew the strap, centre the seam, sew across the end and turn it through — a tube turner makes this much easier.
  • Adding Padding: Iron the fusible fleece interfacing onto the back of your main fabric for a soft, comfortable mat.
  • Positioning the Strap: Fold the mat to find and mark the centre line, then tack the strap in place so it sits perfectly square.
  • Working with PUL: Place the waterproof fabric right sides together with the main fabric — the shiny side is the right side.
  • Turning and Finishing: Sew all round leaving a 10–15cm gap, turn through, push out the corners, then top-stitch the whole outside edge (which also closes the gap).
  • Fitting Kam Snaps: Add one snap at each end of the strap, checking you have matching male and female halves.
