Betty Shoulder Bag – PDF Sewing Pattern & Instructions

BETTY is a compact everyday shoulder bag with a front flap that closes over a magnetic clasp, and a webbing strap you set to your own length with a slider and two D-rings. The corners are boxed, so the bag holds its shape instead of going flat.

Quick Facts (At a Glance)

  • Finished Size: Approximately 22 cm wide x 19 cm high
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Format: Digital PDF
  • Closure: 20 mm magnetic clasp beneath the front flap
  • Strap: Fully adjustable 25 mm webbing, on D-rings and a slider
  • Seam Allowance: ¼ inch (6 mm)

Materials Required

  • Outer: ½ metre medium or heavy weight cotton
  • Lining: ½ metre medium weight fabric
  • Flap: 25 x 20 cm minimum of medium or heavy weight cotton — a third contrasting fabric looks lovely here
  • Interfacing: optional ½ metre medium or heavy iron-on
  • Webbing: 2 metres of 25 mm — 1.5 m for the strap plus two 10 cm side loops
  • Hardware: 20 mm magnetic clasp, 2 x 25 mm D-rings, 1 x 25 mm slider

What You Will Learn

  • Fitting a magnetic clasp: mark through the backing disc, make the incisions and set the prongs — on both the bag front and the flap lining
  • Making and attaching the flap: sew three sides, turn, topstitch, then anchor it inside the seam allowance so it sits flat
  • Boxing corners: pinch each corner, line the seams up, mark across at 5 cm and trim
  • Building the side loops: thread webbing through a D-ring and stitch the loops into the side seams
  • Threading an adjustable strap: webbing through D-ring and slider and back on itself, so the length is yours to set
  • Bag-in-a-bag assembly: join outer to lining and turn everything through a 10 cm gap in the lining base
