Materials Required

  • Outer Fabric: ½m fleece fabric
  • Inner Fabric: ½m fleece fabric
  • Essential Tools: Sewing machine, clips or pins, fabric weights if you have them, and coordinating thread

What You Will Learn / Techniques

  • Working with Fleece: Fleece stretches more in one direction than the other, so the templates must be positioned correctly — this is clearly marked on the pattern pieces and shown in the video.
  • Cutting on the Fold: Fold your fabric, place the templates as indicated, hold them steady with fabric weights, draw round and pin well before cutting.
  • Sewing Stretch Fabric: Use a longer stitch length of around 4 throughout, with a ¼" seam allowance.
  • Shaping the Hat: Join along the long straight edge, fold right sides together and sew the open side, then sew each curved edge from the tip of the curve to the folded edge.
  • Joining Outer and Lining: Open out and twist the two layers, match the seams, and sew the curved edges — leaving a 7cm gap in the lining to turn through.
  • Finishing: Turn through the gap, close it neatly, tuck the lining inside the outer and turn up the brim.
