Sew a simple lined sun hat — four head sizes, from infant to adult
TULIP is the most straightforward of our sun hats: six panels for the outer, six for the lining, joined and turned through a gap so the brim forms itself. There's no separate brim piece to attach, which makes it a genuinely easy first hat.
It also has the widest size range we offer — the smallest is a true infant size, the largest a generous adult — so you can sew matching hats right across a family. Choose a lightweight, breathable cotton or linen and it'll keep the sun off nicely.
What you'll learn
- Joining six curved panels with a ¼" seam allowance, pressing each seam open
- Leaving a turning gap in one lining seam
- Matching the outer and lining seam-to-seam around the brim
- Snipping around the curve so the brim sits smoothly when turned
- Topstitching the brim and closing the gap

- Size 1: approximately 38cm
- Size 2: approximately 50cm
- Size 3: approximately 56cm
- Size 4: approximately 66cm
What you'll need
Medium weight cotton for the main outer and medium weight cotton for the lining. Seam allowance is ¼" throughout.
